The silent (super) majority

June 10, 2014

Despite all the sound and fury about Obamacare’s coverage of birth control, it turns out there’s very little signified. It’s amazing the way the opposition can gin up a controversy, get it all the way to the Supreme Court, and take up way too much time on Fox News with something as simple, and well-liked, as insurance coverage for birth control.

Polling came out last month showing that contraception coverage is a wildly popular with Americans – especially women-kind Americans. And for good reason. We don’t have the time to bore you with that incredibly long list of all the amazing things that happen when women have access to low-cost modern birth control, but here’s a start:

  1. Women are way healthier and happier
  2. Kids are way healthier and happier
  3. Women are more prosperous
  4. Taxpayers save big
  5. There are WAY fewer abortions (doesn’t everyone like that – even Fox News?)

And if you don’t like the benefits, then let us direct you back to the costs of unintended pregnancy. Nearly half of all pregnancies in the US are unintended. What, you say? Are you kidding? No, we are not. And a big part of that is because effective, long-term birth control has been expensive and hard to get, especially for the many millions without insurance. Obamacare’s coverage mandate will change all that. And it’s about time.
